The HAL MS-6 music server is “open the box, plug it up, and your playing music in a few miniutes”.įrom his thread at AudioCircle Introducing the HAL MS-6 Music Server/Streamer () I settled on PiCore because getting Qobuz access was not difficult and did not require additional software or a fee other than the Qobuz subscription. The software for the Pi has matured and is simpler to configure but still, there is no concise “how-to”, and it still is a challenge for the timid. I revisited the Pi as a server and found what I think is a better software package and discovered things have changed quite a bit. ![]() When I purchased my Innous Zenith last year, which took more time to unpack than it took to get the music flowing, I moved my little Pi server to the living room with a couple of Vanatoo active speakers for background music. I persevered and got a server up and running. The learning curve was steep and fraught with one disaster after another. This is the route I took a couple of years ago when I wanted to get off a computer running JRiver. If you Google “Raspberry Pi as a music server” you will get pages and pages of online videos and white papers at least as high as halfway up Mt. If you are computer savvy and do not mind challenges that will send you screaming into the wild, one of the best bets is the Raspberry Pi. If you are curious and want to take the plunge without dropping a few mortgage payments there are some alternatives. A quick look on the net and a complete package that works with minimal setup out of the box is priced around $2k and I feel you hit the area of diminishing returns around $6k with the uber bunch going out to $30k and beyond. How the manufacturer lessens and isolates the noisy environment from the data signal is where the quality of the final sound comes from. Computers by their very nature are inherently noisy. The quality/price of the server is due to a couple of areas. ![]() This is what separated the men from the boys. ![]() If you ever hooked up your system to the headphone outputs of a laptop you will quickly hear the problem. A music server is a computer attached to the network and has software to serve up your music files to either an internal DAC or an external DAC via USB. And depending on your sound system this might be all you need. It can be as simple as a laptop connected to the network for your music files on a USB drive or a NAS (Network Attached Storage), USB out to your DAC and your system. Or you may only be interested in streaming from Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, etc. How you serve up your files depends on personal tastes and the size of your library. After turning on 2FA on your account, you can scan a QR code to tie that account to your app. Two-factor apps use one-time passwords (OTP) as your second factor. We’ll also briefly touch on hardware keys that use either a hardware token or fingerprint scanner to approve your login. These apps work on iOS and Android, usually providing you with single-use codes or push notifications on your mobile device. We have a deep dive into what two-factor authentication is if you need more information.įor the purposes of this guide, we’re focusing on 2FA apps like Microsoft Authenticator and Authy. There are some differences between factors, and there are even differences in how one-time codes are generated and sent to you. It works by combining two of the factors listed above, so you might use your password as your main factor and a 2FA app as a secondary factor. Most websites support 2FA in some form, including Amazon, PayPal, Reddit and all major social media platforms. ![]() Something you are: your fingerprint, face scan, etc.Something you own: your mobile device, a 2FA app or a 2FA hardware key.Something you know: usually your password. They’ll also need your second factor.Īlthough multi-factor authentication tools like OneLogin consider everything from the IP address of the login attempt to the time of day, there are three main factors most online services use: For example, if you have a compromised password in a data breach, the attacker won’t be able to unlock your account with your password alone. Instead of using just a single factor to authenticate your identity, like a password, you use two different factors, usually your password and a one-time code sent via SMS or email.īy spreading the risk across two factors, it’s much less likely that an attacker will be able to unlock one of your accounts. Two-factor authentication - or two-step verification - is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your online accounts. More commonly, 2FA is vulnerable to account recovery attacks and phishing schemes. Two-step authentication can be hacked through man-in-the-middle attacks, though this is becoming increasingly less likely. If an app's CLI tools pretty much just launch the GUI version of the app, there's not much potential there for danger, now is there? Common sense will prevail in the you're a switch tech, and a Mac user. It may take a while, but I believe Apple will see the light on this some time down the road. It just comes down to developers making the best app they can. I recommend TextWrangler for a lot of folks that I wouldn't call power users, just because of it's awesome text-wrangling capabilities. For me, it doesn't come down to "power user" or not. I still hold out hope that they will implement such a process down the road. I see from this hint that is not happening yet. I had hoped that Apple could review each app on a case-by-case basis and approve at least some apps to install CLI tools. Use camel case as a best practice for naming your variables and constants.Use the equal sign to assign data to a variable or constant.Use the var and let keywords to declare new variables and constants.Variables and constants are used to keep track of data in your app. Then, veryfirstname in camel casing would be veryFirstName, which is much easier to read. ![]() Camel casing simply means starting the first word with a lowercase letter, and starting every subsequent word with an uppercase letter. Thus, a good capitalization method to use is camel casing. Ideally, a variable name should be one to four words long.Ī variable name such as veryfirstname can also be hard to read, though. If they are too short like str, you won’t know what kind of data the variable holds. If they are too long, they can get hard to read. There’s a fine balance to upkeep when it comes to the length of your names. I mentioned before that your variable names should be descriptive so you know what kind of data they hold. Best Practices for Naming Variables and Constants In those cases, it’s simply a matter of changing the var keyword to the let keyword in the variables’ declarations. Also, if your program uses variables that never change their data, Xcode will suggest changing the variables into constants instead. Over the course of your Swift journey, you’ll build a sense of when to use variables versus constants. Despite this, it’s more preferable in some cases to use constants over variables, like to keep track of data you don’t intend to change later. Here, Xcode tells me that I cannot assign something else to the constant lastName because it was already assigned the value of “Smith”.Īt this point, it seems that variables are much more flexible than constants. Here’s how our variable looks in the playground: A complete example of the variable declaration is given below. Since we named this variable “firstName,” we’ll give it a piece of text data, namely the word “Tom.” Note: the single equal sign lets us assign a piece of data to the firstName variable. For example, if I had a piece of data for someone’s first name, I might name my variable firstName.įollowing your variable name, add an equal sign and then the piece of data you want to keep track of. ![]() You can name it anything you want, but the name should clearly describe the data the variable will contain. First, type the keyword var, followed by a space, and your variable’s name. Let’s learn how to create, or declare, a new variable to track a piece of data in memory. This is where variables come in, to help keep track of data within an app. ![]() For us to work with data, we need a way to refer to it in our programs. Your computer stores data in its memory to keep track of where the data is and what it is. We can even have text data like "Hello" surrounded by double quotes on line 5. Data can be numbers like 123 and the decimal 0.7 as shown on lines 3 and 4. ![]() ![]() With the aid of Irvine on the other end of the line, Nicole will spend her days in the hotel inspecting the various sections of the winding corridors and as the story unfolds, not only will she piece together her families dark past, but she will also form a close bond with the FEMA agent.Īs pieces come together, this mature story can get a little uncomfortable, as it touches upon suicide, abuse and grooming, but its intriguing tale of mystery will keep you hooked throughout, which is aided by the amazing voice-cast. The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a slow burn story, that does take a little while to get going, but once the plot begins to unfold, you will find it incredibly difficult to put down the controller, during the 3+ hours it might take to finish its story. In terms of gameplay, there’s not a great deal to report, as with most narrative driven adventures. What will Nicole uncover will she make it out of the Timberline Hotel alive and at what cost? However, in order to fulfil her mother’s dying wish of selling the Timberline Hotel, Nicole must not only confront her past ghosts, but she will consequently uncover the dark story of a girl by the name of Rachel Foster, who lost her life at the same young age as Nicole, when she left the hotel 10 years ago and the involvement of her father tied to the death of the young girl. Thankfully for Nicole, she is not entirely alone, because on the other end of the phone, she has the help of Irving, a young and enthusiastic FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) agent, who is more than willing to give Nicole all the help that she needs to complete the inspection of her family hotel. However, following an aggressive snow storm, the attorney that Nicole was set to meet, could not make it to the hotel in the heart in the Montana mountains, so she must carry out the inspection alone, until at least when the attorney arrives. ![]() Nicole is required by law to meet an attorney at the hotel in order to inspect the vacant building to enforce a sale, which was the last wish of her mother. Nicole does not want to return home, due to the fear of suppressed memories coming to the surface, which would force her to confront her troubled past and controversial family history. ![]() The Year is 1993, and you play as Nicole, a woman that after ten years of avoiding her past, following the death of her parents, she is tasked to returning home to the family run business at the Timberline Hotel, located in snowy Lewis & Clark County, Montana, a small town were gossip runs rampart within its close-knit community. So what is The Suicide of Rachel Foster? Well as the title of the game so obviously suggests, the story centres on the suicide of one Rachel Foster. The term “ Narrative Adventure” is far more fitting in my humble opinion, which brings me on to The Suicide of Rachel Foster. Sure these games do have a lot of walking involved, but they are also incredibly narratively driven as you slowly piece together the story, to its dramatic conclusion with an experience that might stay with you for years to come. Games like Dear Esther, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, and two of my clear favourites, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and Firewatch, deserve better than being labelled a Walking Sim. So to label a game as a “ Walking Sim” might imply that this game is purely a simulation that involves walking, replicated in the most realistic way possible, which as I’ve just said, does the game in question a big disservice. At its most basic form of assumption, to be a “ Walking Sim” might indicate that the game in question is a simulation similar to that of train, truck or flight sims, or even management sims. The dubbed “ Walking Simulator” or “ Walking Sim” as a term is a made-up genre that I believe does a big disservice to the game that has been labelled with that “ genre”. ![]() Other things to look for when choosing a squishmallow for your kid include: Squishmallows are available in a wide range of colours, so you can choose one that your child will love.
